EUV signals associated with O+ ions observed from ISS-IMAP/EUVI in the nightside ionosphere

چکیده

Abstract The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imager, EUVI-B, on board the International Space Station (ISS) under Station–ionosphere-mesosphere-atmosphere plasmasphere cameras (ISS-IMAP) mission was originally intended to observe EUV emissions at 83.4 nm scattered by $${\mathrm O}^+$$ O + ions. During mission, EUVI-B occasionally detected evident signals in umbra of Earth. However, source has not been verified. To evaluate effect EUV, we conduct a Monte Carlo simulation which considers multiple scattering In addition, modeled contribution 91.1 emission, is due recombination O}^{+}$$ ions and electrons, because might affect measurement from wavelength range covered. results suggest that likely be negligible while explains observations morphologically quantitatively. We therefore conclude observed Earth can largely attributed emission recombination. This conclusion would facilitate use data for reconstructing density.

The nightside ionosphere of Venus under varying levels of solar Euv flux

Solar activity varied widely over the 14 year lifetime of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter, and these variations directly affected the properties of the nightside ionosphere. At solar maximum, when solar EUV was largest, the Venus ionosphere was found to extend to highest altitudes and nightward ion transport was the main source of the nightside ionosphere. At solar minimum, nightward ion transport wa...

Magnetic Energy Storage and the Nightside Magnetosphere–Ionosphere Coupling

The change in the magnetic energy stored in the Earth’s magnetotail as a function of the solar wind IMF conditions are investigated using an empirical magnetic field model. The results are used to calculate the two normal modes contained in the low-dimensional global model called WINDMI for the solar wind driven magnetosphere–ionosphere system. The coupling of the magnetosphere–ionosphere (MI) ...

Euv Sunspot Plumes Observed with Soho

Bright EUV sunspot plumes have been observed in five out of nine sunspot regions with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer – CDS on SOHO. In the other four regions the brightest line emissions may appear inside the sunspot but are mainly concentrated in small regions outside the sunspot areas. These results are in contrast to those obtained during the Solar Maximum Mission, but are compatible wi...

Initial observations of the nightside ionosphere of venus from pioneer venus orbiter radio occultations.

Pioneer Venus orbiter dual-frequency radio occultation measurements have produced many electron density profiles of the nightside ionosphere of Venus. Thirty-six of these profiles, measured at solar zenith angles (chi) from 90.60 degrees to 163.5 degrees , are discussed here. In the "deep" nightside ionosphere (chi > 110 degrees ), the structure and magnitude of the ionization peak are highly v...

Short-period solar cycle signals in the ionosphere observed by FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC

[1] We analyze 2 years of the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC GPS radio occultation data to study the response of the Earth’s ionosphere to the solar rotation (27-day) induced solar flux variations. Here we report electron density variations in the ionosphere ( 100–500 km) associated with the 27-day solar cycle. The peak-to-peak variation in electron density at low latitudes in the F2 region is about 10–10 e...
